Maine Homes and Ice/Snow Storms!
Take it from me. I am without power with 83,000 plus Mainer's at the moment. As a Real Estate Professional, When buying a home I always recommend a few helpful tips to weather these potentially costly natural events. Here are some of the things that can protect your home as well as your family and pets.
If your heat depends on power...you need some type of alternative heating source for your home. Woodstoves, gas heaters, generators and quality propane heaters are popular....but THEY MUST BE USED SAFELY AND IN ACCORDANCE OF MANAFACTURER GUIDELINES. Do not use unsafe sources of heat for your home.
KEEP YOUR FREEZER AND REFRIDGERATOR CLOSED AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE TO CONSERVE COLD AND YOUR FOOD. If it is cold enough outside or in your garage, you have "natures" refrigerator at your use. You can also use your fridge as a cooler.....fill it with ice.
Have plenty of water to flush toilets, hand bathe etc.
Fill your tub the night before for toilet flushing water.
Of course, have flashlights and batteries in an easily accessible area.
Having your home set up for common weather events can be a nice saleability feature......
Vacant homes and vacation properties need to be weatherized in the winter. You can install alarms, remote internet sensors and hire companies to help watch these properties. Neighbor scan help with a watchfull eye too.
So as we weather another storm here in Maine get smart! At least we do not have alot of tornados, earthquakes and hurricanes!
